## 1. Grammar focus

The negative marker **pa** usually comes before the verb or before the tense/aspect marker. It is much simpler than English do not / does not / did not.

**Pronunciation guide:** pa = pah; keep it clean and short.

## 2. Rule

Use **pa** before the verb phrase: **Mwen pa konnen**. With another marker, place pa before the marker: **Li pa ap vini**, often contracted in speech and writing as **Li p ap vini**.

## 3. Examples and building blocks

Start with the simple pattern before studying contractions.

| Creole pattern | English sounds-like guide | English meaning |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Mwen pa konnen. | *Mwen pah koh-nen* | I do not know. |
| Li pa pale. | *Lee pah pah-leh* | He / she does not speak. |
| Nou pa manje. | *Noo pah mahn-zheh* | We do not eat. |
