# No Silent Letters in Haitian Creole

Haitian Creole Reading, Lesson 03

No Silent Letters in Haitian Creole

Written letters and graphèmes do real work. Learners should not drop final sounds.

   3

bouch, mouth

## 1. Sound & pronunciation

English and French learners often ignore final letters because their first languages allow silent spellings. In Creole, regular written sounds are expected to be pronounced.

**Pronunciation guide:** /bouch/ - boosh; final ch is pronounced.

## 2. Spelling rule

Write **bouch**, not French-style bouche. Read the final **ch**. The learner should hear the word as a compact set of pronounced sounds.

## 3. Vocabulary building blocks

Use short words to build confidence with final sounds.

| Creole word or phrase | English sounds-like guide | English meaning |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Bouch | *Boosh* | Mouth |
| Plen | *Plehn* | Full |
| Liv | *Leev* | Book |
| Tab | *Tahb* | Table |
| Chak | *Shahk* | Each / every |
