# The Letter A in Haitian Creole

Haitian Creole Alphabet, Lesson 01

The Letter A in Haitian Creole

Master the pure “ah” sound and the post-noun article rule used after oral vowels.

   A

avyon, airplane

## 1. Sound & pronunciation

A is a steady oral vowel. Keep it open, short, and clean; do not let it shift the way English “a” changes in apple, face, and father.

**Pronunciation guide:** /a/, ah, like father.

## 2. Grammar rule

The definite article comes after the noun. When the noun ends with a plain oral vowel sound, use **a**: **gato a**, **kouto a**, **pye a**.

## 3. Vocabulary building blocks

Practice contextual reading with words that start with, contain, or clearly showcase **A**.

| Creole word | English sounds-like guide | English translation |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Avyon | *Ah-vwee-ohn* | Airplane |
| Achte | *Ahsh-teh* | To buy |
| Ak | *Ahk* | With / and |
| Anpil | *Ahn-peel* | A lot / many |
| Aprann | *Ah-prahn* | To learn |
