# The Present Marker AP in Haitian Creole

Haitian Creole Grammar, Lesson 02

The Present Marker AP in Haitian Creole

Use ap to talk about an action in progress or a near future meaning, depending on context.

   2

ap + verb

## 1. Grammar focus

The marker **ap** comes before the verb. It often marks an action happening now, and it can also point toward a future or planned action.

**Pronunciation guide:** ap = ahp; keep it short and attach it rhythmically to the verb.

## 2. Rule

Build the pattern as **subject + ap + verb**: **Mwen ap aprann**, **Li ap manje**, **Nou ap travay**.

## 3. Examples and building blocks

Let the surrounding sentence decide whether ap feels progressive or future.

| Creole pattern | English sounds-like guide | English meaning |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Mwen ap aprann. | *Mwen ahp ah-prahn* | I am learning. |
| Li ap manje. | *Lee ahp mahn-zheh* | He / she is eating. |
| Nou ap travay. | *Noo ahp trah-vigh* | We are working. |
| Yo ap vini. | *Yoh ahp vee-nee* | They are coming / will come. |
| Ou ap koute. | *Oo ahp koo-teh* | You are listening. |
