# The Sound Ò in Haitian Creole

Haitian Creole Alphabet, Lesson 20

The Sound Ò in Haitian Creole

Ò is the open O sound and the accent matters.

   Ò

wòch, rock

## 1. Sound & pronunciation

Ò is more open than O, close to the vowel in saw. The grave accent signals the open vowel.

**Pronunciation guide:** /ɔ/, aw, like saw.

## 2. Grammar rule

A grave accent before N can keep vowel + N separate from a nasal vowel: **òn** is not **on**.

## 3. Vocabulary building blocks

Practice contextual reading with words that start with, contain, or clearly showcase **Ò**.

| Creole word | English sounds-like guide | English translation |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Wòch | *Wawch* | Rock |
