Haitian Creole Alphabet, Lesson 11
The Letter H in Haitian Creole
Include H as a rare but real Haitian Creole graphème.
H
hap, harp
1. Sound & pronunciation #
H is pronounced in the small set of words and interjections that use it. It is less frequent than many other consonants, so this article stays intentionally short.
Pronunciation guide: /h/, h, like hotel.
2. Grammar rule #
The broad orthography rule still applies: no silent letters. If a Haitian Creole word is written with H, learners should not drop it as in French.
3. Vocabulary building blocks #
Practice contextual reading with words that start with, contain, or clearly showcase H.
